Many dictators have started their reign of terror by dissolving the very institutions which safeguard democracy.
They sow distrust for journalists, scientists, opposing political parties, and any voice that stands in opposition to them and their fascist agenda.
They change the way government works in order to justify declaring martial law, and effectively making themselves a sovereign with no one who is able to act as a check to their power.
